Intercom
Known in Japanese as an "interphone", this is a communications device that alerts you of visitors. When a visitor rings the doorbell, you can pick up a handset to talk to them before opening the door. Some apartments have an intercom connected with an auto-lock system, letting you talk to visitors at the main entrance of the building.
