What Is Araiyakushi-mae Station Like?

Araiyakushi-mae Station along the Seibu Shinjuku Line, is not far from Nakano and Shinjuku. Despite being in such a central area, this place has a laid-back atmosphere which is populated by many families. You can also find a shopping street with an atmosphere reminiscent of the old days. As the name suggests, this area is famous for the temple, Araiyakushi Baishouin.

It is the largest temple in Nakano Ward.

Known as the “God of Eyes” after the temple responded to 2nd Edo Shougun Hidetada’s prayers and cured his daughter’s eye disease, Araiyakushi Baishouin is also believed to bring good luck for child-raising.

Furthermore, at every 8th,18th and 28th of the month, a market called “Hachi no ichi” is held, where antiques as well as foods and flowers are sold.

At the “Ai Road Shopping Street”, also regarded as the path leading to Baishouin, there are around 130 big and small stalls lining up and bustling with customers.

From the station, walk through the shopping street past the residential area, and you can reach Tetsugaku-dō Park which abounds in nature, in just 10 minutes. This park serves as a community space for the local residents. It’s great for taking a stroll during weekends.
